Dear Parents,

As a member of the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), I periodically receive a newsletter entitled Report to Parents; the focus of the report this month is reading.

NAESP notes that “encouraging children to read at home is one of the most powerful ways that parents can support students' learning. Just 15 minutes of reading at home per day can make a difference in students' reading fluency.”

Click here to read this month's Report to Parents, "The Rewards of Reading," offering strategies to get kids reading more at home.

Click here to read information from the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRP). The document from TCRP offers ways parents can help and support reading and writing at home. The TCRP was founded and is directed by Lucy Calkins, The Robinson Professor of Children’s Literature at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, New York and there mission is to help young people become avid and skilled readers, writers, and inquirers.

Our district utilizes the resources from TCRP for the teaching of reading and writing in grades kindergarten through 5thgrade.

I hope you find this information helpful.
